Real Madrid legend is now without a club after seeing his Fluminense contract terminated.

The former Brazil left-back only returned to his boyhood club in February last year following a short spell with Greek giants . But the 36-year-old is now on the hunt for another club after a bombshell announcement.

A statement from Fluminense on Saturday read: “Fluminense FC and Marcelo Vieira announce the termination of their contract by mutual agreement between the parties. A graduate of the youth teams, Marcelo returned to Fluminense in 2023, having participated in the conquest of the 2023 Campeonato Carioca titles, the unprecedented 2023 Conmebol Libertadores titles and the 2024 Recopa.

Marcelo’s exit comes in the aftermath of what appeared to be a public falling out with his now former manager Mano Menezes. The Brazilian looked set to be introduced as a substitute against Gremio but after exchanging words with Menezes, returned to the bench and put his bib back on.

Striker John Kennedy was then introduced instead. Explaining the incident, the Fluminense boss said: “I was going to put Marcelo in at that point, but I heard something I didn’t like and changed my mind.

“I put [John Kennedy] on the wing, he’s a strong player so you have a way out. We’ve always had a way out. I don’t think it was because he came in that the team had any kind of problem.

“It’s not easy to come in at that point in the game, you know that, it’s a game-ending moment. He wasn’t coming in to solve any problems, he was coming in to maintain what we had. And there were two or three minutes left in the game."

Marcelo made 68 appearances in all competitions during his second spell with Fluminense, winning the Rio de Janeiro state championship and the Copa Libertadores. Those successes were just the latest in a series of honours during the left-back’s glittering career.

Marcelo won six league titles, five Champions Leagues, two Spanish cups and a whole host of other titles with . His spell at the Santiago Bernabeu ended in 2022, with the Brazilian then signing for Olympiacos but he made just ten appearances before leaving.
