Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, level on points and both within reach of the Premier League’s top three, go head-to-head in North London on Saturday lunchtime. This is their first meeting since last season’s Europa League final in May, when Brennan Johnson’s lone goal clinched a 1-0 victory for Spurs in Bilbao.
Tottenham endured a difficult weekend in the league, falling 1-0 to rivals Chelsea and leaving the field to boos from their supporters. However, they bounced back in style on Tuesday night, dismantling Copenhagen 4-0 at home in the Champions League. Even after being reduced to 10 men following Johnson’s second-half red card, Spurs continued to dominate, with Micky van de Ven scoring a sensational solo goal—likened by Thomas Frank to “Lionel Messi turned into Micky van de Ven”—before Joao Palhinha added a fourth to secure their second win in four group-stage matches.
Spurs fans are now calling for consistency, and Frank is hopeful that his side can build on this momentum. The Danish manager believes the team has made progress both in style and structure, but whether their commanding display against Copenhagen marks a true turning point remains to be seen.
Currently sixth in the Premier League and just a point behind third-placed Liverpool, Tottenham are aiming to record a third straight league win over Manchester United for the first time since the 1959-60 season, having completed the double over the Red Devils last year. However, Spurs have lost more Premier League home games in 2025 than any other team (nine); only in 1994 and 2003 (10 each) have they suffered more home defeats in a calendar year. Frank himself has also experienced nine losses in his last 16 home league matches (W3 D4) across his spells with Brentford and Spurs.
Manchester United and manager Ruben Amorim deserve credit for their turnaround after a shaky start to the campaign. Following a 3-1 defeat at Brentford in late September, United responded with three consecutive Premier League wins and a 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest last weekend. At the City Ground, United’s 1-0 half-time lead evaporated in the space of three second-half minutes, courtesy of goals from Morgan Gibbs-White and Nicolo Savona, but Amad Diallo’s superb late volley salvaged a point and extended United’s run of scoring at least twice to four games.
Amorim, a nominee for October’s Manager of the Month, believes his squad are “giving everything” and “have the potential to do better” as they climb the table. He has also emphasized the need for consistently high energy levels after noticing a drop-off against Forest.
Now eighth in the league, trailing only Spurs and Chelsea on goal difference, United will be aiming to go five matches unbeaten for the first time since January/February 2024—a period that also marked the last time they scored two or more goals in five consecutive games. However, United have struggled against Tottenham recently, failing to win any of their last seven encounters in all competitions and losing the last four; the last team to defeat United five times in a row was Liverpool, between 2000 and 2002.
