Karnal (Haryana) [India], November 1 (ANI): A Haryana Police official reported on Friday that a pair of masked assailants carried out a shooting at the residence of Sarpanch Savita in Bamberheri village, Karnal's Munak.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Satish Gautam stated that three to four shots were fired, injuring Mahendra Singh, the Sarpanch's father-in-law.
"We received information about the incident and have arrived at the hospital. The injured is Mahendra Singh, whose daughter-in-law, Savita, is the Sarpanch. Shots were fired at them. Doctors have informed us that he is out of danger. We are investigating further after speaking with the family, who reported that three or four rounds were fired," said DSP Gautam.
The police official added that they are still determining the motive behind the attack. According to the injured man's son, four to five individuals fired multiple rounds, and Mahendra Singh was struck in the arm and shoulder.
"We need to verify the details before we can provide information on the motive. The son of the victim stated that four to five individuals, possibly from the same village, were involved. The victim was shot in the arm and shoulder and is currently receiving treatment at the hospital. His condition is critical, and doctors will keep us updated," the officer added.
DSP Gautam informed that the police received word of the incident around midday. The family believes the shooting stemmed from an ongoing feud.
"We were notified around 12:00 pm about the shooting in Bamberheri village. The family has indicated this was due to an old rivalry," he said.
MLA Joginder Rana, visiting the hospital, remarked, "This incident is highly concerning. We will release more information after speaking with the Sarpanch. Those responsible must face strict action."
Ajay Kumar, the injured man's son, explained that his father was critically wounded after being shot twice in the arm around 12:00 pm. The family quickly transported Mahendra Singh to the hospital, though the attackers allegedly tried to intercept them en route.
Ajay also reported that the attackers had been seen surveilling their house the day before the incident. He attributed the attack to a longstanding feud.
"One of the attackers lost a son, and our name was mentioned in that case, though investigations found no link to us. The attackers believed we were somehow responsible for the death. At the time of the incident, all family members, including my mother, child, and wife, were present," said Ajay, husband of the Bamberheri village Sarpanch. (ANI)
