OpenAI has launched a new, more accessible version of its Deep Research tool for all ChatGPT users, including free users, as well as Plus, Team, and Pro users. The lighter tool, based on OpenAI’s o4-mini model, is designed to provide more efficient web research capabilities, offering valuable insights while minimizing system load and reducing operational costs. Although not as powerful as the original Deep Research version, it is still effective at gathering and analyzing data across the internet.
What is Deep Research and How It Works
Deep Research, originally introduced earlier this year, is a tool developed to assist users in conducting detailed online research. It is designed to gather information, perform fact-checking, and compile references for tasks that require deeper analysis. Built on OpenAI’s o3 model, the tool allows users to submit queries—such as product comparisons or market overviews—and then collects and analyzes data from various online sources to generate a structured report.
The original version of Deep Research could take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes to process queries, depending on the complexity of the task. It also provided users with a detailed summary of the steps taken during the research process and listed the sources used. The new lightweight version offers similar functionality but at a faster and more cost-efficient rate, albeit with shorter responses and fewer system demands.
Usage Limits for Different ChatGPT Users
The release of the lighter version also brings with it a new set of usage limits. Free ChatGPT users now have access to five Deep Research queries per month, while Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Education users can make up to 25 queries per month. Pro users are given the ability to run up to 250 queries. Once a user reaches their limit for the more robust Deep Research version, the tool automatically switches to the lightweight model without any interruption in service.
In the future, OpenAI plans to introduce additional features, such as visual elements like charts and data visualizations, to make the research reports more digestible and user-friendly. These updates aim to enhance the tool’s overall usefulness while maintaining efficiency for users across all tiers of access.
