Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the Bairabi-Sairang railway line, connecting Mizoram’s capital Aizawl to India’s railway network for the first time.
Calling it a “lifeline of transformation,” he said the project will revolutionise lives, boost trade and tourism, and strengthen connectivity across the Northeast and Southeast.
“This is not just a railway connection but it is a lifeline of transformation. It will revolutionise the lives and livelihoods of people of Mizoram. Farmers and businesses of Mizoram can reach more markets across the nation. People will be able to access more options for education and healthcare. This will also create employment opportunity in tourism, transport and hospitality sectors,” Modi said, attending the event virtually.
He added that the new railway line would not only strengthen Mizoram’s economy but also enhance regional integration.
The ₹8,070-crore project, spanning 51.38 km, includes 48 tunnels and 55 major bridges built under complex geological conditions. It will link Aizawl with Assam’s Silchar and the rest of India.
Rajdhani Express from Mizoram
Along with the new line, the Prime Minister flagged off the Sairang–Delhi (Anand Vihar Terminal) Rajdhani Express, Mizoram’s first direct train to the national capital.
He also launched the Sairang-Guwahati Express and the Sairang-Kolkata Express. Sairang station, about 22 km from Aizawl, is now set to become a key gateway for the state.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, “This enhanced connectivity will improve access to hospitals, universities, and markets, thereby strengthening educational, cultural, and economic ties across the region. It will also generate employment opportunities and significantly boost tourism in the region.”
‘From neglect to growth engine’
Modi said Mizoram plays a major role in India’s ‘Act East’ policy, with projects like the Kaladan multimodal transit project and new railway links designed to connect the state with Southeast Asia.
Highlighting the region’s transformation, he said, “Northeast is becoming a major hub for entrepreneurship; 4,500 startups, 25 incubators operating in region.”
The Prime Minister said the Centre’s consistent focus had changed the developmental trajectory of the Northeast. “Centre working for development of Northeast for last 11 years, region now India’s growth engine,” he said.
He contrasted the present with past neglect: “Northeast suffered heavily due to vote bank politics. Those neglected before are at forefront now, those marginalised earlier in mainstream at present.”
Mizoram’s contribution, he said, was integral to the nation’s journey. “Whether freedom movement or nation building, Mizoram’s people have contributed greatly. History day for Mizoram as Aizawl is on railway map, overcoming challenges, difficult terrains.”
