IIM Calcutta 'rape' case: West Bengal police form SIT for probe

A nine-member special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed by the Kolkata Police to probe the alleged rape of a woman inside the IIM-Calcutta campus. CCTV footages have been sought from the institute, people in the know said. The place of occurrence has been sealed and a forensic team has visited the spot.

The accused Premanand Mahaveer Toppannavar (26) from Karnataka, a second-year student of IIM-C, has been arrested and produced before a Kolkata court on Saturday afternoon and remanded to police custody. West Bengal State Women's Commission has taken suo moto of the case on Sunday. "We stand by the family and are ready to help them," Commission chairperson Leena Gangopadhyay said.

A woman was allegedly raped in the students' hostel of the iconic IIM-C at Joka in Kolkata late Friday evening, as per her complaint registered on Saturday evening, police sources said. However, in a twist of events, the rape victim's father told media persons on Saturday that his daughter was not tortured or assaulted, but fell from a vehicle.
