Incessant rain triggered flooding and landslides leading to the death of over 20 people in the last 24 hours in Northeast India.
At least five persons died in Guwahati in the past 24 hours as incessant rain triggered landslides in different areas of the Guwahati. Two people died in flooding in Lakhimpur.
In Arunachal Pradesh nine people died, seven died in landslides in East Kameng and two in Ziro. In Nagaland’s one person died due to a rock fall in Chumoukedima.
In Mizoram six people died, one person died in Aizawl due to wall collapse, five people died when a house collapsed in Lawngtlai. In Meghalaya two died in landslide in East Khasi hills.
Continuous rains since the last three days have also led to floods in different districts of Assam and severe waterlogging in capital town Guwahati, forcing the state government to issue red alerts in 12 districts of the state.
The situation turned bad in Assam's capital town Guwahati where several areas witnessed floods and landslides due to the incessant rains since the last 48 hours.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated in X, "We have been reviewing the impending situation for the last 3 days and over 14,000MT of rice has also been dispatched to provide relief in affected areas.”
An official in Arunachal Pradesh said that a vehicle carrying seven people was swept away by a massive landslide between the Bana-Seppa stretch of NH-13 in East Kameng district and plunged into a gorge.
Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister and local MLA Mama Natung, and Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju deeply condoled the deaths.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju in his post said: “Deeply saddened by the tragic landslide in Arunachal Pradesh that claimed seven innocent lives. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. May the departed souls rest in peace. Prayers for strength and healing to all affected by this heartbreaking loss.”
In a post on his X handle, Mama Natung said: “It’s very painful to hear about the tragic loss of seven lives in my Assembly constituency due to a landslide on NH 13 Road in between Bana and Seppa.”
“My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families during this difficult time. I request everyone to remain vigilant and avoid travelling at night during the monsoon season. My thoughts and prayers are with the families affected. May their souls rest in peace. Om Shanti Shanti,” he said.
A hanging bridge in Chulyu village, under Keyi Panyor district, has been completely washed away due to incessant rainfall.
Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla visited various flood affected areas of Imphal city. He went around different locations on the banks of Imphal River, assessing its overall condition. The key locations that were visited included Kangla Nongpok Thong, Lairikyengbam Leikai, and Singjamei Bridge.
Governor instructed the officials to monitor the river situation closely and to implement pre-emptive measures. Further, directions have been given to Deputy Commissioners to arrange evacuation and temporary relief measures for affected people. SDRF and NDRF units have also been alerted.
