NEW DELHI: The BJP will contest 68 seats in the 81-member assembly in Jharkhand as part of the seat-sharing arrangement among National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners announced at a joint press conference in Ranchi on Friday.

The party has given 10 seats to the AJSU, two seats to the JDU and one seat to the LJP (Ram Vilas). The JDU will contest Jamshedpur West and Tamar assembly seats.

The party is likely to field Independent MLA Saryu Roy from Jamshedpur West and former MLA Gopal Krishna Patar alias Raja Peter from Tamar assembly seat. Chirag Paswan's LJP (Ram Vilas) will contest the Chatra seat, which is currently held by RJD MLA and state minister Satyanand Bhogta. In 2019, BJP contested the assembly election alone and won 25 seats. This year, the party has left some seats for the NDA partners to avoid a split of anti-government votes.

The BJP, AJSU, JDU, and LJP will jointly contest the election in Jharkhand. "Discussions have been completed and our campaign will proceed together. Very soon we will come up with our candidate lists. We will work hard in the elections, and by ending the rule of JMM and Congress in the INDI Alliance, we will breathe a sigh of relief," Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, BJP's election in-charge of the state,, told media persons in Ranchi.

AJSU leader Sudesh Mahto also addressed the briefing and said the alliance was something the people of Jharkhand wanted before the assembly election.

"We have gathered on this platform to formally announce our participation in the state's upcoming elections...The prevailing sentiment across the state is that people want to see both parties working together. If both parties unite, it will result in outcomes that benefit both the state and its people," Mahto said.
