Great news for hill lovers! Mussoorie, also known as the “Queen of the Hills,” is about to get closer to Delhi, thanks to a major road infrastructure project announced. The new elevated expressway link would significantly cut off travel time and ease traffic congestion.
Here's what travellers should know:
Delhi to Mussoorie road coming soon: A new elevated road will soon connect the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway to Mussoorie. Once completed, the road will allow for direct travel from Delhi to Mussoorie in just four hours by car. This is expected to cut down the current travel time significantly and make the journey smoother for tourists.
Traffic relief for tourists: As of now, travellers to Mussoorie most of the time get stuck in heavy traffic within Dehradun city. The new elevated road will bypass these congested regions and bring much-needed relief not just for tourists but also for local commuters and residents of Dehradun.
Large-scale land acquisition announced: To build the 26-kilometer stretch of elevated road, more land will be acquired in 26 areas of Dehradun. Over 2,600 houses located along the Rispana and Bindal riverbanks are expected to be affected. These properties are currently being marked for acquisition, and the process has already begun with red signs indicating affected homes.
Compensation to property owners still not clear: While the government has confirmed that landowners will be compensated, no official policy has yet been finalised regarding whether they will receive monetary payment or alternative land. So far, it appears likely that most displaced residents will be offered cash compensation, as plans for land-for-land exchanges have not moved forward.
Boost in tourism: With an estimated cost of INR 6,100 crore, the project is one of the region’s most ambitious infrastructure developments. It aims to boost tourism in Mussoorie, enhance regional connectivity, and reduce the strain on existing city roads. Once completed, it’s expected to open up faster, more reliable access to one of Uttarakhand’s most popular hill stations.
If you're planning a trip to Mussoorie in the coming years, this new elevated road could make your journey quicker and easier. However, the project also involves major urban changes and displacement, so its development will be closely watched for both its benefits and its social impact.
