Why are marriages not performed on Vivah Panchami?
Lord Rama and Mother Sita were married on the fifth day of the month of Margashirsha, which is why this day is celebrated as Vivah Panchami. However, people generally avoid marriage on this day. In fact, Lord Rama and Mother Sita were married on Vivah Panchami, but just a few days after their marriage, they faced various hardships. Lord Rama and Mother Sita renounced their royal duties and spent 14 years in exile. Furthermore, Mother Sita had to endure hardships like the Agni Pariksha (fire test) and abandonment. It is believed that worshipping Lord Rama and Mother Janaki on Vivah Panchami and reciting the sacred verses from the Ramcharitmanas, composed by Tulsidas, bestows desired results on the devotee.
