“I'll Marry Her, But Only If She Agrees”: Son-in-Law's Shocking Twist in Elopement Case with Mother-in-Law

Send Push

In a bizarre turn of events, police on Wednesday arrested a mother-in-law and son-in-law duo who had fled from Aligarh, sparking headlines and public curiosity. Currently under interrogation, both individuals maintain that their decision to be together was mutual and justified. According to them, they now want to live together as life partners.

Rahul, the man at the center of the controversy, was initially engaged to Shivani—but instead ran away with her mother, Apna Devi.

When questioned, Rahul said, “I never had any bad intentions. Her husband used to abuse and mistreat her. She had no support from her family and was deeply troubled. We began speaking more, and she confided everything in me.”

He recalled that on April 6, while he was out shopping, Apna Devi called him in distress, saying she would take a drastic step if he didn’t come. Concerned for her well-being, he rushed to her side.

The pair first met in Kasganj, then made their way to Muzaffarpur, Bihar, on April 7. Once they learned the police were searching for them, they decided to surrender voluntarily. They reported to Dadon police station.

On the topic of marriage, Rahul said, “Everything depends on her. If she agrees, I’m ready. The only condition is her consent. I want to be with her—age doesn't matter to me.”

Apna Devi’s Story: "He Understood My Pain"

Apna Devi, who now refers to Rahul as her husband, shared that her own husband disapproved of her talking to Rahul and even once sarcastically told her to run away with him. Feeling insulted and unsupported, she found comfort in Rahul, who, she says, understood her pain.

“After we left, we first reached Bareilly, then took a bus to Bihar. We stayed in a hotel in Muzaffarpur. Rahul even started looking for a job so we could settle,” she said.

She added that after realizing their phones were being tracked and their search had spread to Uttarakhand, they decided there was no point running any further. From Bihar, they went to Delhi, then to Aligarh, and finally turned themselves in at the police station.

Daughter Left Shocked, Wedding Plans Shattered

Shivani, Apna Devi’s daughter and Rahul’s fiancée, was left blindsided. The two were to be married on April 16, but days before the wedding, Rahul disappeared with her mother—allegedly taking cash and jewellery.

Police reports claim that Apna Devi took wedding jewellery worth ₹5 lakh and ₹3.5 lakh in cash. However, she denies the allegation, stating that she left home with only ₹200 and her mobile phone.
