- Lung cancer: Lung cancer is the leading cause of death and 90% of cases are related to smoking. According to the CDC, smokers have a 15-30 times higher risk than non-smokers. Secondhand smoke also increases the risk and causes thousands of deaths every year.
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: 90% of COPD-related deaths are caused by smoking. It is a serious lung disease that makes breathing difficult and is the third leading cause of death. Smoking in childhood slows lung development and increases the risk of COPD.
