In Chhath Puja, mainly Sun God and Chhathi Maiya are worshipped. During Chhath Puja, arghya is offered to the Sun God. For this, fasting women go to the ghat. Performing Chhath Puja on the ghat has special significance, as this festival shows respect for nature and water. Water is the basis of life and during Chhath Puja, it is customary to go and worship on the banks of rivers, ponds, or any holy reservoir.
Offering water arghya to the Sun God is the main ritual and gratitude is expressed to him by offering arghya to the rising and setting sun on the ghat. It is believed that positive energy is received from the rays of the sun through water which purifies the body and mind. Worshiping on the ghat keeps the environment pure and worshiping collectively at one place also promotes social and community unity.
