Girl, 6, locked in filthy room her whole life with no food can only communicate in sounds

A six-year-old girl who was kept locked inside her room her whole life has been rescued by police.

The child, who was found in a state of neglect, was removed from her parents' care after cops received an anonymous tip about her welfare.

They discovered the little girl in a dark filthy room with only a teddy bear for company. She was found to have been fed a liquid-only diet, and had never been to school, nor taught how to speak.

As a result of her inability to speak, she communicated with child protection counsellors through basic sounds.

In addition to her lack of development, she was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, a blood infection and severe malnutrition. She had not received her infant vaccinations and was found in a state of neglect in the family home, located in the city of Sorocaba in Brazil.

Child protection counsellor Ligia Guerra said, via the Daily Mail, that the little girl's hair was 'tangled' and looked 'as if it had never been washed'.

She was also unaware of the outside world, having been locked in a room for her entire life. Guerra said: "The girl was very apathetic and dazzled by everything."

After being taken by police, the girl was admitted to hospital for an examination and health check, and was then sent to a children's home.

Both of her parents were arrested and charged initially with unlawful detention, and are liable to be further charged with mistreatment.

However, according to police chief Renata Zanin, "the mother cannot grasp the gravity of the situation". When she was questioned about her daughter’s neglect, she reportedly "gave evasive answers" and "showed no remorse whatsoever".

It comes after a mother and her husband were placed under arrest after their 11-year-old daughter gave birth at home without ever seeing a doctor during her pregnancy, according to authorities.

Cherie Walker, 33, and Dustin Walker, 34, of Muskogee County, Oklahoma, were taken into custody on felony child neglect charges earlier this month. Investigators allege the girl, who was 36 weeks pregnant, had not received medical care in more than a year before delivering a baby on August 16.

Assistant District Attorney Janet Hutson told reporters the case was "extremely disturbing", adding: "This child is traumatised. She gave birth at home without medical assistance... this will be her life for the rest of her life."

Prosecutors were made aware of the incident after she was taken to hospital following the birth of the child. "I was horror-stricken to find out it's an 11-year-old girl who's given birth, and that she had no medical care and she had no one to be with her," Assistant District Attorney Janet Hutson told KJRH.

Hutson says she is now planning on filing additional charges against Cherie and Dustin. Prosecutors are awaiting the paternity test to find out who fathered the child, which could take two weeks.

In the meantime, the 11-year-old girl and her five siblings have been removed from the home, where next door neighbour Cheryl Adkins claimed they were exposed to unstable and unsanitary conditions.

"They have no running water for the last two or three years," she claimed to KJRH, noting that she made several calls to police and authorities over the years to check on the children.

Adkins also said she is convinced that Cherie and Dustin knew about the young girl's pregnancy, despite their insistence that they were completely unaware.
