Sheffield United have confirmed the appointment of Chris Wilder following the sacking of Ruben Selles. Wilder has returned for a third stint as Blades boss after their disastrous start to the Championship campaign.
Wilder was sacked in June after their play-off heartbreak, with United turning to former Hull and Reading boss Selles. But he was dismissed after losing his six matches in charge and the club have returned to Wilder for stability.
Sheffield United said in a statement: "Following a difficult start to the season, the board felt it necessary to make a change in order to stabilise performances and strengthen our push for promotion. While the adoption of a different style of play was pursued with ambition, results have clearly not met expectations.
"Chris Wilder returns with proven leadership and an unparalleled understanding of Sheffield United. We are confident he is the right person to restore momentum, unite the squad and supporters, and deliver the results necessary to achieve our objectives this season.

"We would like to thank Ruben Selles for his hard work and professionalism during his time at the club. Responsibility for recent results lies with us as owners, and we remain fully committed to supporting the team and pursuing promotion."
The 57-year-old Yorkshireman was sacked following the Blades' agonising play-off final defeat to Sunderland at Wembley, having narrowly missed out on automatic promotion. But he has received a reprieve after Selles lost all five of his Championship matches and once in the Carabao Cup.
The final straw proved to be a 5-0 thrashing by Ipswich on the weekend which left the club rooted to the bottom of the Championship table. After pulling the trigger on Selles, the club said: "Sheffield United Football Club's board of directors have opted to make a change at managerial level.
"After a disappointing start to the EFL Championship campaign, Rubén Sellés has been relieved of his duties as manager. Following a review of recent performances, and taking into account the feelings of supporters, the timing of the change has been made to give the club the best possible opportunity to improve the current league position. The board of directors wish to thank Mr Sellés for his hard work."
Wilder has signed a contract until June 2027 and will take charge of the next game against Charlton on Saturday.
