All aboard the Midnight express for Ascot’s Sodexo Live Princess Margaret Stakes. MIDNIGHT TANGO (1.40) came out as the moral winner when runner-up in the Listed Empress Stakes at Newmarket last month.

She was anchored in the rear in the early stages on a day when it paid to race up with the pace. Her strong finishing effort saw her get within a head of the winner Argentine Tango despite racing on the unfavoured far side. That’s strong form and she should get a decent pace to aim at today. Have 2pts each-way at 9-1. A couple of bookies are paying out on four places.

HICKORY (3.35) loves the Royal track. He swooped late to land the Victoria Cup over 7f on his first start of the season in May and backed it up with a solid effort at Sandown on a rare attempt at today’s mile distance.

His subsequent races haven’t set up for his hold-up style and it’s interesting that his trainer Jamie Osborne has plumped for this contest over the 7f of the International Handicap.

With Jamie Spencer in the saddle, it’s worth backing him to be as effective over this trip. Have 1pt each-way at 22-1. Sky Bet is offering six places.

Later on the card, TOCA MADERA (5.15) looks a good bet in the Whispering Angel Handicap. His third behind subsequent Group 1 winner American Affair and smart course specialist Jm Jungle at York in May was a superb effort.

His run over today’s course and distance two weeks ago was better than the bare form looks as he had an unhelpful draw in a race dominated by those on the stands’ side.

There’s a decent prize in Brian Meehan’s speedster and it could well be today. Have 2pts each-way at 14-1. Plenty of firms are going four places.

At York, the jump jockeys get the chance to experience the speed of one of Flat racing’s fastest sprint tracks in their version of the Nunthorpe.

BAYRAAT (3.20) finished third in this race 12 months ago despite finding trouble at a crucial stage. He’s run with credit in both starts this year and he should get the perfect set up with a stack of frontrunners in the field. Have 1pt each-way at 14-1. Sky Bet is paying six places.
