The film "Haq," inspired by the Shah Bano case and starring Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi, has been lauded for tackling a significant social issue. However, it is held back by five critical flaws that prevent it from achieving its full potential.
Firstly, the film suffers from a slow narrative pace that occasionally dips into boring territory, diluting the impact of the serious subject matter.
Secondly, Emraan Hashmi's character Abbas Khan, though well acted, lacks clarity and depth, making him neither a compelling hero nor a clear antagonist.
Thirdly, the strong supporting cast, including Vartika Singh as Ayesha, are underutilized, with limited screen time and weakly written dialogue reducing their effectiveness.
Fourthly, the film indulges in excessive melodrama, with certain scenes—such as social ostracism and neighborly mockery—feeling overdone and unnecessary.
Lastly, the screenplay unnecessarily weaves a romantic angle centered on Shazia’s love for her husband, which shifts focus away from the core issues and feels forced.
