Three young holidaymakers have been ploughed down by a car in the popular resort of San Antonio in Ibiza. The horrific accident happened this morning at around 11.15am local time opposite the busiest beach of Playa des Pouet. The resort was packed with tourists enjoying a day out at the beach when the accident took place.
The three victims, all believed to be young women, were struck by a jeep on Calle Moli, in front of the On the Bay restaurant.
Shocked eye witnesses said the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon left the road and careered onto the pavement, running over the three young women and knocking down a lamppost. The vehicle came to a standstill on the pavement, only a few feet away from a pedestrian crossing.
Dramatic pictures show crowds of people on the scene, with the women lying on the ground and being treated by medics. The first to attend to the injured women were lifeguards at Playa des Pouet.
Shortly after, several local police patrols and three ambulances from the 061 Emergency Service arrived, treating the women before transporting them to a medical centre.
According to eyewitnesses, two of the girls appeared to be in serious condition, while a third had foot injuries.
At this time, neither 061 nor the Sant Antoni Police have provided further information so it is not known if the women are British or their ages. The driver is a young man, around 30 years old, according to these same witnesses.
Officers have closed traffic on the street and are interviewing numerous witnesses to clarify the details of the accident.
The accident has raised concerns in the area, which at the time was full of people enjoying the beach or having a drink in nearby establishments.
In May, a tourist from Alicante who was spending a few days on the island, died just a hundred metres from the scene of the accident this morning. Like the girls, he was walking on the sidewalk when a van hit him.
