Cole Palmer reveals what he was really thinking when Donald Trump refused to leave podium

Cole Palmer admits he was 'a bit confused' about why Donald Trump took centre stage when Chelsea lifted the Club World Cup on Sunday. Palmer played a starring role in the final, scoring twice and assisting another as the Blues produced a shock win over Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain.

The 23-year-old first came face-to-face with Trump when he was presented with the Golden Ball, which is awarded to the best player at the tournament. A clip of the trophy lift itself then went viral as Palmer could clearly be seen mouthing "What is he doing?" when Trump stood beside Chelsea captain Reece James.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino did his best to usher Trump away after the trophy had been handed over to James, but he was ignored as the USA's Commander-in-Chief chose to stay put. Palmer was snapped with a face like thunder when it became clear that Trump was going nowhere.

Afterwards, the Chelsea playmaker explained what he was really thinking. "I knew he was going to be here," he said. "But I didn't know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy so I was a bit confused, yeah."

Palmer got the ball rolling for Chelsea at New Jersey's humongous MetLife Stadium with a low finish into the bottom corner, and he had doubled their advantage with an almost identical finish inside half an hour.

The game was put to bed before half-time when Palmer turned provider for new signing Joao Pedro, who dinked Gianluigi Donnarumma to make it 3-0. A dreadful day was sealed for PSG when Joao Neves was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella's hair in the 85th minute, and then a brawl erupted after the full-time whistle.

Palmer told Channel 5: "We're building something special, something important. We've got a young team. Everyone has talked a lot of s*** about us all season but I feel like we're going in the right direction.

"It's a great feeling [to win]. Even better because everyone doubted us before the game. We knew we had to go out there and fight like we did against a great team."

Chelsea are quids in after clinching the first revamped edition of the Club World Cup, as the Blues are estimated to have banked a whopping £92million in prize money for winning the month-long American extravaganza.
