Jack Draper threw up at the US Open again but this time held on to win in the heat of New York. The British No.1 reached the semi-finals here last year before he was sick on court as he lost to Jannik Sinner.
He returned to the Big Apple to play his first match since Wimbledon wearing a compression sleeve because of a left-arm injury.
And the rusty No.5 seed faced a physical battle against Argentine world No.203 Federico Agustin Gomez who saved a match point in the third set tiebreak and hit 50 winners. Draper vomited during the third set - and tried to clean up the mess on the court - before recovering to win 6-4 7-5 6-7 6-2 in just over three hours.
Relieved Draper said: "I wasn't too sure if I was going to make it here this year - we did a great job with the team since Wimbledon to get back on court. It wasn't my finest performance but credit to my opponent - he played some outstanding tennis.
"I look forward to hopefully improving and getting better as the tournament goes on. I am not putting too much expectation on myself. I have put the work in and if I can get the level back, I will be really tough to beat. I am just happy to be able to compete here. I haven't played loads - I am trying to preserve as much energy as I can, especially early on. Definitely in any sport and in anything, you have to fake it till you make it, that is for sure."
Meanwhile, Cam Norrie claimed his usual pre-match meal of chicken and rice at 10am gave him the fuel to survive his battle of the fittest against Seb Korda.
Starting the first match of the day at 11am, the British No.3 took the first two sets 7-5 6-4 before the American was forced to retire in the heat.
Norrie said: "It's just quite tough to fuel for the 11am start. I woke up early at 6.45am, had a good breakfast, some coffee and then obviously with the nerves and everything, you're trying to get as much fuel as you can in you. Chicken and rice at 10am is not easy. But typically in the past I've done well in really hot, humid conditions.
The American's young career has been dogged by physical issues. The former world No.15 missed Wimbledon With a stress fracture to his right shin and pulled out of his return event at Winston Salem with illness.
"I feel for Sebi," said Norrie. it's good to see him back playing and tough to see him finish like that."
Emotional Petra Kvitova revealed she could not eat before her last match ended in a 6-1 6-0 defeat to France's Diane Parry.
The double Wimbledon champion announced earlier this summer that the US Open would be her final tournament.
After a post-match presentation, the Czech left-hander said: "I didn't expect myself either (to be emotional) but, since I woke up this morning, I felt it. I felt it would be not good. I couldn't eat. I was really nervous. But in a different way, I would say. I couldn't move, I couldn't swing, I couldn't do anything. It was really difficult."
Australian Open champion and No.6 seed Madison Keys suffered a shock 6-7 7-6 7-5 defeat to Mexican world No.82 Renata Zarazua.
