He's usually the expert people turn to for heating tips, savings accounts and money off your household bills. But now Martin Lewis' Money Saving Expert website has turned its attention to the increasingly expensive world of computer games - in particular, the UK's most popular console platform, PlayStation.

PS5 games, often at £70 a pop, are a significant investment. But Martin Lewis' MSE has revealed a surefire way to get the best deals on the latest games including everything from Ghost of Yotei to Hogwarts Legacy, just in time to fill any discerning gamer's stocking this Christmas without breaking the bank. The biggest saving, according to MSE, comes from buying a PS5 disc drive.

While adding a disc drive to your PS5 costs £70, you will likely recoup that outlay in the savings you'll make buying disc based games instead of being forced to use the PlayStation digital store.

It says: "If you have the digital version of the PS5 console, then investing in the disc drive add-on might save you money over the long run. It costs around £70, and is only available for the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro [some earlier PS5 models came with a disc drive as standard], but once you have it you open yourself up to a much wider variety of sellers (both retailers and second-hand sellers) when you shop around for games.

"Before long, that £70 disc drive will more than recoup its cost."

MSE highlighted some of the price differences between disc and digital copies. It showed that Hogwarts Legacy, the Harry Potter bestseller, is £18.98 on disc via Amazon, or £64.99 on the PlayStation store for a digital copy.

For Gears Of War Reloaded, the best price on disc is £32.99 at Currys. On the PS5 digital store, it costs £69.99.

Ghost of Yotei is £59.95 at The Game Collection, or £59.99 at Argos. On the PlayStation store, it costs £69.99.

Of course, with the disc copies you can also sell or trade them in when you've beaten it, recouping even more of the money. You can't sell or exchange digital downloads.

If you're determined not to use discs, the best way to save on digital copies is to stalk the PlayStation store's sales. These refresh every Wednesday, with big sales held in New Year, spring, Days of Play (which is usually May or June), Summer (July or August), Halloween, Black Friday and Christmas.
