A Netflix thriller that was initially met with scathing criticism has defied expectations by becoming a chart-topper, with fans now urging others to give it a chance.

Bet, released on May 15th, is based on the Japanese manga Kakegurui but had been blasted by fans of the manga.

Set in St. Dominic's private school, where social status is dictated by one's gambling prowess, the hierarchy is disrupted when newcomer Yumeko, played by Miku Martineau, utilises her impressive skills to challenge other students.

Last month, viewers took to Netflix's YouTube comments to voice their discontent after the trailer was released. Many were concerned that the adaptation would stray too far from the original manga and cater excessively to Western audiences, abandoning its Asian heritage.

One disgruntled fan wrote: "Tf? Kakegurui didn't need a westernized adaptation." While another jokingly quipped: "Somebody arrest Netflix, they murdered Kakegurui."

But despite the initial criticism, the 10-part series has achieved an astonishing 2.4 million views in just one week and now ranks among Netflix's most-watched shows in 32 countries worldwide.

Defying its detractors, the drama has also earned an impressive 73% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, leaving fans eager for the next instalment and begging for a second season, reports .

"Saying I loved the show is a true understatement. I loved it and my boyfriend loved it, genuinely a must-see! I am already eagerly waiting for Season 2," shared one reviewer.

Another concurred with enthusiasm, exclaiming: "Binged all episodes on day 1. Cannot wait for season 2." While another added to the chorus of approval: "Excellent series hope there is a series 2."

The wave of acclaim has even swept over X, formerly Twitter, where one user recommended: "If you need something to watch tonight, I recommend Bet on Netflix."

Confessing their addiction to the series, another user said: "People complaining about the bet series on Netflix but I'm eating it up idc I get entertained by anything."

Meanwhile, a third user heralded the drama as "Netflix's best show right now".

Bet is streaming now on Netflix.
