The United States is set to take a hardline stance on Chinese students, with visas to be revoked for those linked to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in key sectors, Senator Marco Rubio has confirmed.
In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, the senior Republican senator revealed the U.S. government's latest move to curb foreign influence in critical academic and technological areas.
He stated:
"The U.S. will begin revoking visas of Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields."
The new measure signals a clear shift in Washington's approach toward academic exchanges with China, particularly those seen as posing a potential national security risk.
While the full scope of the policy has yet to be outlined, it is expected to target students and researchers in sensitive subjects such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and advanced engineering-fields often cited in security briefings as areas of strategic competition with Beijing.
The move comes amid growing concerns in the U.S. over intellectual property theft and espionage involving foreign nationals working or studying in American universities.
Yesterday, Rubio announced a freeze on all student visa applicantions to the U.S., including those for British nationals, throwing thousands of plans into disaray.
He said: "Effective immediately, in preparation for an expansion of required social media screening and vetting, consular sections should not add any additional student or exchange visitor (F, M, and J) visa appointment capacity until further guidance is issued septel, which we anticipate in the coming days," reported Politico.
Experts like Aaron Reichlin-Melnick from the American Immigration Council are up in arms, citing fears of profound economic loss: "Trump's decision to suspend student visa interviews threatens nearly $44 billion in economic contributions and over 370,000 jobs across the United States, according to NAFSA. If the United States stops taking foreign students, the economic impact would be catastrophic," reported the Express US.
