Chennai: Chennai Metro Rail is likely to conduct the test run of its first driverless train on October 26. This driverless train, part of Chennai Metro's Phase Two project, will feature three coaches. The test run is scheduled to take place at the Poonamallee Metro Depot. For the Rs 63,246 crore Phase II project, Chennai Metro Rail aims to introduce driverless trains, unlike the Phase I project, which requires a train operator on board. The contract for this driverless system was awarded at a cost of Rs 1,125.92 crore. Production of the first train began seven months ago at Sri City, with an initial delivery target set for the end of August. However, the delivery was delayed and was expected to be completed by the end of September.Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials have stated that although the manufacturing of the first driverless train has been completed, a 'static testing' process will take place at Sri City. Although the trains have undergone various tests at the manufacturing centre, a more extensive testing phase will begin once they arrive. These trains, designed to carry around 1,000 passengers per trip, will go through both static and dynamic tests. Critical components such as brakes, the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system, lighting, circuits, and the pantograph will be inspected and tested thoroughly. The overhead electrical system will be charged, and the first train will soon be tested on the ballasted track. With plans to launch the first service from Poonamallee to Porur next year, additional trains are expected to arrive at the depot in the coming months for further testing.
