Whitman Middle School In Wauwatosa Faces Backlash For Inviting Trans Activist

A program at Whitman Middle School in Wauwatosa, in Wisconsin, faced backlash over the presence of a trans activist, Aaleh Hughes. The school has since sent out a communication to the parents telling them that the event will not be cancelled. As per a Facebook post by Whitman Middle School, Hughes was slated to appear in a program for 'GSA & Whitman Explorers' celebrating LGBTQ+ history. It was slated to be held with the 7th-grade students over lunch on Friday. However, the program received massive backlash, especially on social media, with many conservative account slamming the school for the program. "This is the kind of person that schools are putting near your kids. Why is principal @SarahDianich allowing this to happen?" wrote Libs of TikTok, a popular conservative X account.

After the backlash, Principal Sarah Dianich refused to cancel the event, saying that the school's GSA was established to provide a safe and supportive environment. "Our school’s GSA was established to provide a safe and supportive environment where students can connect and build understanding within our school community," Dianich wrote in a statement . Bringing in guest speakers like Aaleh Hughes is one way we aim to enhance these efforts." Who Is Aaleh Hughes? Aaleh Hughes is a Black trans woman, is a prominent entertainer, advocate from Milwaukee. She serves as the First Lady of the Milwaukee Chapter House of Alain Mikli and show director at This Is It Bar. She is also a Youth Program Coordinator at the MKE LGBT Community Center.
