Leopard mauls 10 goats to death in Kandhamal

Berhampur: At least 10 goats were mauled to death by a leopard at Sartul, a remote hilltop village in the Kotagarh wildlife sanctuary in Kandhamal district. Forest officials recovered the carcasses and buried them after conducting a post-mortem on Thursday. It was the first case of killing of goats by a leopard in the area, forest officials said.

“Forest personnel led by the range officer of Kotagarh rushed to the spot after they got information about the death of 10 goats in a leopard attack,” said Biswaraj Panda, divisional forest officer (DFO), Baliguda. “We are analysing the pugmarks to ascertain which animal killed the goats,” said the DFO. “Two camera traps have been installed in the village to capture pictures of the big cat. Compensation would be paid to the affected people after verification,” he added.
