Krishnagiri: The district administration has issued a flood alert to people residing near the banks of the Thenpennai river, following heavy rain.

According to a statement, the water level in the Krishnagiri reservoir project (KRP) dam is expected to reach its maximum capacity in a few days, due to good water flow in the catchment regions.

Krishnagiri district collector S Dinesh Kumar said the flood alert will remain in place until further notice. He urged residents, especially those near the Thenpennai river and low-lying areas, to evacuate to safer locations.

Water resources department (WRD) officials said the dam's water level crossed 50.5 feet on Monday.

WRD officials told TOI that the inflow was measured at 2,000 cusecs on Sunday, and that the entire inflow is being directed into the river to keep the dam's water level stable at 50.5 feet. An official added that they also anticipate the rate of inflow to increase further in the coming days as rainfall continues in the catchment areas.
