Panaji: The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) took decisive action on Friday by demolishing 35 unauthorised structures at Karaswada Mapusa along national highway 66. The move came in response to numerous complaints received from the PWD and traffic police regarding severe traffic congestion in the area.

According to a senior MMC official, the municipality’s technical cell conducted an investigation following the complaints, which revealed the presence of 52 structures contributing to the traffic problem. The owners of these structures were promptly issued notices and given the opportunity to attend hearings to assess the situation.

After a thorough probe, it was found that only two out of the 52 structures had all the necessary permissions, while the remaining 50 were deemed “unauthorised”. As a result, demolition orders were issued for the illegal structures. “Among the 50 unauthorised structures, 14 owners filed appeals against the demolition order. One owner took the initiative to demolish their structure independently, while the municipal corporation took the work of demolishing the remaining 35,” the official said.

One of the individuals who did not identify himself, said that he has been operating his business from one of the demolished buildings for 25 years. “I was selling fruits for my livelihood. Now I am on the road, and have nowhere to go.”

Another individual said that he was staying on rent in one of the alleged illegal structures.

To ensure the smooth execution of the demolition work and to maintain law and order, police personnel were present during the operation.
