Kochi: Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA), following its Kasturba Nagar food street project, is now gearing up to expand its footprint in the food and hospitality sector by launching two new food hub projects in Kakkanad and Maradu. The locations have been selected due to their growing popularity as bustling residential and commercial hubs, as well as the increasing footfall of food lovers and urban dwellers in search of vibrant culinary experiences.
GCDA plans to utilize its own land in these two prime locations to set up dedicated food zones. These spaces will be leased out to food vendors and entrepreneurs, creating organized food hubs that offer a diverse array of cuisines in hygienic and well-managed environments. With a focus on promoting local businesses and boosting urban food culture, the authority expects positive response from entrepreneurs.
"In Kakkanad town, we are planning to utilize our land near the municipality building to start a food hub. We will provide all facilities for private groups to start the hub. GCDA's brand name is expected to attract a large number of food lovers," said a GCDA source.
An initial allocation of Rs 65 lakh has been earmarked for the development of these projects, which will cover infrastructure, basic amenities and beautification efforts. The initiative is also expected to create employment opportunities and enhance local economy.
Meanwhile, GCDA has invited expressions of interest from entrepreneurs in the food sector to set up diverse stalls in the 20 shops in Kasturba Nagar near Panampilly Nagar. As part of a central govt-supported project, the food street is expected to be inaugurated within weeks.
