US President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Thursday a groundbreaking trade agreement with Britain, the first such arrangement since the implementation of global tariffs .

"This morning I am thrilled to announce that we have reached a trade deal with the UK. Today is the Victory Day for World War 2, we won the together exactly 80 years ago, so there could be no more perfect morning to reach this historic agreement ," Trump declared during a White House press briefing .

During simultaneous press conferences in Britain and Washington, Keir Starmer joined Trump via video link at the White House, describing the US-UK trade agreement as "a really fantastic, historic day."

The agreement emphasises the importance of reciprocity and fairness in international trade relations and enhances access for American agricultural products , according to Trump, although he indicated that the final documentation was still in progress.

"The final details are being written up," Trump stated in the Oval Office. "In the coming weeks, we'll have it all very conclusive," he added.

Trump announced that a trade agreement with Britain would substantially boost American exports, particularly beef and other agricultural products, to the UK market.

"The deal includes billions of dollars of increased market access for American exports, especially in agriculture," Trump said.

He further stated that the agreement would "dramatically increase access for American beef, ethanol and virtually all of the products produced by our great farmers."

The last meeting between Starmer and Trump occurred during a White House visit in February.

A trade deal with the United Kingdom would be symbolically important and a relief for British exporters. But an agreement would do little to address Trump’s core concern about persistent trade deficits that prompted him to impose import taxes on countries around the world.

The U.S. ran a $11.9 billion trade surplus in goods with the UK last year, according to the Census Bureau. The $68 billion in goods that the US imported from the UK last year accounted for just 2% of all goods imported into the country.
