Larsen & Toubro ( L&T ) has partnered with US-based Clean Core Thorium Energy (CCTE) to provide clean energy solutions worldwide, the company announced on Friday. This collaboration aims to accelerate the global use of nuclear power , especially in developing countries that need more carbon-free electricity for growth.
L&T said in a BSE filing that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work with CCTE on delivering clean energy solutions using CCTE's patented ANEEL (Advanced Nuclear Energy for Enriched Life) fuel.
ANEEL, a nuclear fuel that combines thorium with high-assay low-enriched uranium, is designed for pressurized heavy water reactors like CANDU (Canadian deuterium-uranium) reactors. It can lower operating costs, reduce waste by over 85 per cent, and improve safety with its Accident Tolerant Fuel properties.
The fuel also supports energy security by encouraging thorium's large-scale use and reducing uranium consumption.
L&T added that ANEEL fuel will promote clean energy, non-proliferation, safety, decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries, and support a circular economy.
Anil Parab, whole-time director & senior executive vice president of Heavy Engineering and L&T Valves, said, "With growing global demand for nuclear energy, we're identifying new ways to offer 'One Stop Solutions' to customers. Building a supply chain for ANEEL fuel, using L&T's manufacturing strength, is a key step. L&T will support CCTE within India's legal framework."
