TikTok is the birthplace of trends. From trends that analyse relationships to those that help lead a healthy lifestyle, for someone seeking guidance from the app, influencers have much to give. Currently, a new trend has taken the TikTok world by storm: that of 'cloud' coffee. This recipe is said to be nutritious and refreshing, and here's how it's made.

What is 'cloud' coffee?
Well, cloud coffee is just a tropical swap on your normal cup of joe. In this recipe, you use coconut water instead of plain water. A simple recipe is a shot of espresso over ice, some coconut water and some creamy non-dairy milk.

Well, according to Mackenzie Burgress, a registered dietitian nutritionist who spoke with The Post, the addition of coconut water to coffee does give it a "nutrient-boosted twist."

“Mixing coffee with coconut water can make it a bit more hydrating thanks to coconut water’s electrolyte content,” she said. While it may vary from one brand to another, a cup of coconut water can contain 470 mg of potassium, which is 10% of the daily recommended intake and 19 mg of magnesium, which is 5% of the daily intake for adults. “Overall, if you’re into the flavour, it’s a fun way to sneak a few extra nutrients into your morning drink,” she said.

Additional health perks
Not only sodium and potassium, but cloud coffee could also be a way of giving your body the much-needed supply of electrolytes during the summer, which helps with hydration. Additionally, coconut water is also rich in antioxidants that help in immune health and fight oxidative stress. “It’s also a lighter, more hydrating alternative to sugary creamers,” added Burgress.

She suggests making it even healthier with coconut milk, as it will give the coffee the creaminess without the added sugar.

For the lovers of coffee who are interested in trying new recipes, cloud coffee could be worth a try, or maybe even a swap!
