Google is all set to host its annual developer conference, Google I/O 2025 today. The two-day event will kickstart with CEO Sundar Pichai ’s keynote speech at 10am PT (10:30pm IST). Ahead of the annual event, Pichai has shared a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), sharing his excitement before the I/O 2025.
In one such post, he shared a photo with Demis Hassabis – Co-Founder & CEO, GoogleDeepMind . The image is captioned “Having a deep think…”
Pichai, previously responded to a post by Hassabis featuring a short video of onions being sautéed in a pan, symbolizing the anticipation for Google I/O 2025. “cooking up something tasty for tomorrow…,” wrote Hassabis to which the Google CEO responded with a flexed bicep emoji.
In a third post, Nick Fox – SVP, Knowledge & Information, Google shared a photo of himself with Elizabeth Reid, VP, Head of Search, Google on the eve of I/O 2025. Foxo became Google Search's head in October 2024 after Prabhakar Raghavan’s transition to Chief Technologist. The image background has a countdown timer showing 17 hours, 50 minutes, and 7 seconds.
The image was captioned “… I’m back! and just in time for I/O tomorrow!”. Pichai replied to the post with a fox emoji.
Google I/O 2025: How to watch the livestream
Google I/O spans two days May 20 and 21, while the opening keynote is set to begin at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET (10.30 pm IST) on May 20. Interested users can stream the keynote via Google’s I/O website or YouTube channel. Plan for a lengthy session as I/O keynotes often last around two hours, and although there may not be any major Android reveals this year, the duration is expected be similar.
Google I/O 2025: What to expect
According to a report by The Verge, this year’s Google I/O keynote will once again center around AI. It follows a day after Microsoft’s Build event, setting up a direct comparison. At the event, Google is expected to announce new Gemini features for phones and other devices, more powerful Gemini models, and updates on the Project Astra.
Apart from AI, Google may also be planning to share more about Android XR , including its prototype smart glasses, following a brief tease during last week’s Android Show. With Samsung aiming to launch its Project Moohan headset later this year, this I/O may be Google’s opportunity to showcase its XR software.
Unlike past I/Os, new Pixel phones or Nest devices are unlikely to be announced at the upcoming event as any major hardware launches would have been timed around last week’s events. The focus is expected to remain on software, primarily AI and XR, with only a slim chance of new XR hardware.
