Tesla CEO Elon Musk , who has been vocal about declining population across the world, has once again warned, saying it is an “existential crisis” for humanity. The tech billionaire was responding to a 60 Minutes report on Japan’s population decline, where birth rates have dropped to 1.3 children per woman. This declining population has resulted in a net loss of nearly a million people annually, as reported by CBS News on April 27, 2025. Replying to the post, Musk wrote:

Japan sees record drop in population
As per official data released on Monday, Japan's citizen population dipped to 120.3 million as of October 2024, marking a record drop of 898,000 people from 2023. This marks the largest annual decrease since comparable records began in 1950. Including foreign residents, the total population stood at 123.8 million, reflecting a decrease of 550,000 people. This is the 14th consecutive year of overall population decline.
