184 fall ill after suspected food poisoning in Assam

GUWAHATI: About 184 people fell ill, due to suspected food poisoning , after attending a religious programme in Assam 's Golaghat district on Saturday, officials said on Sunday. The incident occurred during a ritual at Panchghoriya village, informed Golaghat DDC Vivek Shyam.

While attendees were served with traditional 'jalpan', consisting of snacks with puffed rice and cream, they later complained of stomach ache, headache, vomiting and loose motion and had to be admitted in hospitals. However, by Sunday evening, majority them had been discharged from the hospitals.

"111 people were admitted to Uriamghat model hospital, 58 at Sarupathar Community Health Centre (CHC) and 26 at Swahid Kushal Konwar Civil Hospital (SKCCH). Out of them, 44 are currently undergoing treatment, with 6 in model hospital, 22 in Sarupathar CHC and 26 in SKCCH. The rest have been discharged," an official said.

Sarupathar MLA Biswajit Phukan visited the hospital and enquired about the health condition of the victims. "The district administration informed me that the food inspector will visit the village and investigate the cause of the food poisoning. A medical camp has been set up for the villagers. We have also sent medical teams to the houses of all the individuals who had attended the programme. The team is closely monitoring the situation," Phukan said.
