An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 struck Afghanistan on the night of Friday, the fourth strike in the country, days after over 2,200 killed in deadly temblors
According to the National Centre of Seismology, the quake occurred at 1:55 PM (IST) and was located 110 km east of Kabul.
"EQ of M: 5.0, On: 05/09/2025 22:55:53 IST, Lat: 34.45 N, Long: 70.41 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Afghanistan," NCS said in a post on X.
Earlier today, a series of quakes hit the nation. In the morning, a 5.2, 4.6 and 4.5 hit the nation at different time. These came days after the Sunday's quake, where the death toll went over 2,200.
The death toll from last week’s powerful earthquake in Afghanistan has risen to over 2,200, with hundreds of bodies recovered from flattened homes, Taliban officials said Thursday.
The 6.0-magnitude quake struck remote eastern provinces on Sunday night, wiping out villages and leaving survivors trapped under rubble.
Most casualties were reported in Kunar, a mountainous region with isolated river valleys. Taliban spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat said rescue work and aid distribution were underway, but rough terrain and funding shortfalls are hampering efforts.
This marks the third major quake to hit Afghanistan since the Taliban took power in 2021.
