Former first lady of the US, Michelle Obama wants to set the record straight: if she and Barack Obama were heading toward divorce, it wouldn’t be a secret.
Speaking on the Diary of a CEO podcast with Steven Bartlett on May 1, the former first lady dismissed ongoing speculation about her marriage with the 44th US president. “If I were having problems with my husband, everybody would know about it,” she said. “I would be problem solving in public. I’m not a martyr.”
She added that her brother and IMO podcast co-host Craig Robinson would be the first to know. “Craig would know it,” she said, to which Robinson replied, “I’d be doing a podcast with Barack Obama.”
The rumors aren’t new. Questions about the Obamas’ relationship first went viral when Michelle skipped Donald Trump’s second inauguration. But on the April 23 episode of IMO, she explained the real reason: choosing herself.
“My decision to skip the inauguration... was met with such ridicule,” she said. “People couldn’t believe that I was saying no for any other reason. They had to assume that my marriage was falling apart.”
She went on, “I think I’ve done enough of that,” referring to always doing “the right thing” in public. “And if I haven’t, then I never will.”
The Obamas, married since 1992, have often spoken about their differing personalities. Michelle echoed this again with Bartlett, calling Barack “the ultimate swerver” who did “nothing by the book,” yet described him as “brilliant and interesting.”
